Fresh Hope for Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur as Russian Option Ends for Toby Alderweireld

Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld's proposed move to Russia has come to an end for now with Spartak Moscow pulling out of negotiations, according to Belgian daily Het Nieuwsblad

Liverpool and, more recently, Tottenham Hotspur will be on high alert over the news, coming as it does just over a week after it looked like the transfer target was destined for the Russian capital. It was believed that both Spartak and Ajax had come to terms over a transfer fee but that wage demands from Alderweireld – an estimated €3m-a-year – had been a stumbling block.

It is not clear what has actually prompted Spartak to pull out of the deal, even as reports suggest they have begun to look at other options including Anzhi Makhachkala man Joao Carlos. Both Liverpool and Tottenham had been pursuing Alderweireld with vigour until the Russian connection reared its head, and a resumption of speculation from England is quite possible.

Liverpool, especially, have been on uncertain ground with regards to their defence, having seen Jamie Carragher retire and Daniel Agger subject to transfer rumours.

While Agger has denied any intention to move away from Anfield, Alderweireld is still keen to try and get over to England.

Only last week the 24-year-old had said: "To be honest, I do prefer England over Russia. Every footballer dreams of playing football in the Premier League."
