Italian trequartista and Reds reject gunning for national exposure.
Former Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani, 29, is hoping a successful season with Fiorentina – who finished fourth place in Serie A last season – will catapult him back into a first-team role with the Italian national side.
The Viola giocatore, who returned seven goals from 25 league appearances last season, has been welcomed into the Azzurri squads for the Bulgaria and Czech Republic World Cup qualifiers. An Alberto Gilardino strike ensured a 1-0 victory over Bulgaria on September 6, edging Italy ever closer to the tournament finals in Brazil next summer, however, Aquilani was an unused substitute.
He told Radio Blu: 'The national team has been a goal for Alberto ever since he arrived in Florence and he knows that this season will be a very important one for him. Last season went well, but Alberto hopes this year will be even better.Aquilani's agent, Franco Zavaglia, regards Fiorentina's transfer activity to have been at the elite level over the summer and foresees a strong season for his client.
'Fiorentina have made a big impression in the transfer market. It’s hard to look past Juve for the Scudetto, but I think Fiorentina are a close second – ahead of Napoli, Milan, Inter and Roma.'
Italy host Czech Republic tomorrow, September 10, at the Juventus Stadium.
