Italians make last minute move for Liverpool player as window starts to close

According to reports in the Italian media Napoli are back in the hunt for Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel ahead of the transfer window closing tomorrow night. The Slovakian international has been linked with a move to Napoli in the past and former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is keen to bring him in.
Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport reported today that Benitez is hoping to sign the player at the last minute after it appeared at the start of the season he was no longer in Brendan Rodger’s plans. Liverpool have brought in Kolo Toure from Manchester City who has partnered Daniel Agger. Toure was injured in mid week against Notts County and therefore Skrtel stepped in for today’s win over Manchester United but the imminent arrival of PSG defender Mamadou Sakho could mean Skrtel will have to move on to find regular first team football. Benitez is also looking at Valencia’s Adil Rami as an alternative if they fail to sign Skrtel.
Last month Gazzetta Dello Sport reported that Napoli had stepped up their pursuit for Skrtel as Benitez looked to rebuild the Sere A side’s defence. At the time it was reported that Benitez had made the player his priority for a new central defender and with Skrtel’s current situation at Anfield there was a confidence in signing the player. Benitez was the manager of Liverpool when Skrtel was signed by the club in 2008.
Napoli have already brought in Liverpool’s goalkeeper Pepe Reina on a season’s loan and will be hoping to reunite the two for the next campaign. The Italian club will be looking to offer Skrtel around €4m a season salary, presumably after tax, to make the move to Serie A.
