Daniel Sturridge’s 21st-minute strike has given Liverpool a 1-0 lead at half-time against Aston Villa.
Jose Enrique fired a low cross along the edge of the Villans’ box, which was collected by Sturridge before the former Chelsea man stepped inside two defenders to fire home past Brad Guzan.
It was a deserved lead for the visitors, who put in an impressive first-half display at Villa Park.
But Paul Lambert’s young side have found themselves behind in both of their opening Premier League games prior to tonight’s encounter and fought back to win at Arsenal , before drawing level at Chelsea, only to be scuppered by a Branislav Ivanovic header.

Christian Benteke was put in a great position by left-back Antonio Luna’s pass, but his control let him down, as the chance passed Villa by.
And the Villans had another half-chance as the half drew to a close. Good build-up play from Fabian Delph and Matthew Lowton handed Leandro Bacuna a shooting opportunity, but his effort was well blocked by Kolo Toure.
Benteke tested Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet from the resulting corner, but the Belgian was equal to his countryman’s attempt, while Andreas Weimann saw a deflected strike fly narrowly over the crossbar.

The hosts continued to threaten the Liverpool goal in the second half, with Benteke, Ashley Westwood and Gabriel Agbonlahor all going close to finding the equaliser.
