Walk On - The Story of You'll Never Walk Alone

The story of one song and its extraordinary power - from post war Broadway to LFC's famous Kop. Show-tune - Hit - Anthem - Prayer. YNWA

WALK ON - The Story of 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.

This moving, passionate documentary chronicles the journey and extraordinary power of one song - Rodgers & Hammerstein's classic 'You'll Never Walk Alone', a song that started its life as a Broadway show-tune, but through its adoption by Liverpool Football Club's famous Kop would grow to become the song for any crowd, movement or cause.
We tell the story of how the crowd at Anfield took the song to its heart and in doing so transformed the sound of football, signalling the start of a new terrace culture.
On the 50th anniversary of Gerry and the Pacemakers' version of the song reaching number one, and in the same year that Bill Shankly would have marked his 100th birthday, Tabacula Films have produced a documentary charting the history of why Liverpool fans picked this song as their anthem and how the song has now spread the world over, sung in both defeat and victory.

Presented by Kelly Cates, the film features Liverpool legends Kenny Dalglish, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Ian St John, plus many others.
Getting the film this far would not have been possible without the backing of both the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organisation and Liverpool FC who have both given their full support to our efforts to get this film out.
Reviewers of the film have commented on its outstanding quality and content - our rich history, boasting decades of success both nationally and internationally, changed the face of footballing culture.  For us, the important thing now is to ensure that this documentary, chronicling this unique aspect of our history is made available for all to enjoy. Getting it into the hands of the people who count. You, the fans.

Who are Tabacula?

We are a Liverpool based, independent production company producing films on subjects we are passionate about. Working both for the major broadcasters and on our own independent productions.
We believe that 'Walk On' will appeal not only to Liverpool fans and Liverpool's family but would also be of interest to a much wider audience.  The impact of the song on a cultural level is unsurpassed, from presidential inaugurations to pop concerts.
We are campaigning to bring the film to a global audience, to show the broadcasters that we are no longer solely dependent on them.

Why Kickstarter?

Having gathered footage over the last 18 months and producing a trailer and rough cut, we have found ourselves unable to complete the film on our own resources. The original intention was to sell the rights to broadcasters around the world.  However broadcasters have cooled their interest, citing content, not quality as the reason.  We now want to produce a DVD and put it in the hands of our target audience.  The major costs of the film are in the post production.  Licensing costs make up the large portion, (archive, stills, music rights and original music).  Marketing, advertising, the premiere and distribution of the final DVD.  All costs that we hoped to offset with the broadcast fee.

As well as producing and delivering the DVD’s we are planning a world premiere of the film to be screened in Liverpool Philharmonic hall during October 2013.
This exclusive, one off performance will be followed by an after-show party which will prove to be a hugely popular event for any Liverpool Football Club fan, with many of the films contributors in attendance.
We believe that you the fans will want to see this film. With your help we are determined to ensure that this story be told. Celebrating the cultural importance of our history and enabling us to engage the widest audience possible.
This is our heritage.

Risks and challengesLearn about accountability on Kickstarter

All the footage is in the can, and the current edit is tight. We have had a few internal screenings and we have received great feedback, some of which has called for tweaks to the edit.
The main risks left facing us are the licensing of the rights as the goal was always to not miss any part of the story we thought would leave the fans left feeling sold short. We have all the the music, stills and archive clearances in place and the quotes for them are still good. For example the music, without the rights to the song itself the film could not work. If we had not worked so closely with Rodgers & Hammerstein the costs to use their song as many times as we have would have been prohibitive and the film would not have even been started. Likewise if Liverpool Football Club had not agreed to give us access to their stills archive and, much like R&H, at a price that allowed us to move forward, the project would have been dead in the water.

We feel we have everything in place to complete the film and deliver all the rewards for our backers - DVD distribution, film premieres and after shows are things we have done many times before, and successfully. However we are well aware there are forces out of our control. DVD deliveries can hit snags, cinemas and bars can go out of business. But we promise our backers that we will endeavor to complete the project and make good on our rewards regardless of barriers put in our path.
