Liverpool's new signing could become a regular

The signing of Aly Cissokho will bring competition to the Liverpool team and may force Jose Enrique to up his game.

Liverpool look to have completed the signing of Aly Cissokho from Valencia on a season-long loan with the option to buy.

He is likely to provide competition that has been lacking in the left-back area for the Reds, as Jose Enrique has been the only natural option with youngster Jack Robinson leaving the club on loan to go to Blackpool.

However, Cissokho seems to be Liverpool’s second preference with them missing out on Granada’s Guilherme Siqueira with the demands for the transfer fee deemed to be too high.Liverpool fans might have cause to remember Cissokho, shortly after their 4-1 victory over Manchester United, Porto visited Old Trafford in the Champions League quarter-finals and snatched a 2-2 draw with Cissokho making the gesture seemingly symbolising Liverpool’s winning scoreline into a camera at the end of the game.

Is this a case of Liverpool keeping some money back in case they need to spend more than they would want on chasing Willian from Anzhi? Or are Liverpool trying to be ‘efficient’ with their money?

Nevertheless Cissokho has an interesting background and has attracted some big name clubs – notably AC Milan - but that move bizarrely broke down because in his medical there was an abnormality with his teeth that could affect his posture in the future.

However he featured regularly for French side Lyon before moving to Valencia, but the Spanish club have apparently been looking to offload him, with the intention to raise funds and cut the wage bill.

At the age of 25, Cissokho should be in a decent spell of his career and if Liverpool were to take up the option at the end of the season – naturally depending on the left-back’s performance for the side – it could be a very good piece of business, as well as an attempt to get Jose Enrique to improve on his weaker aspects of his game.

Whether he will become Liverpool’s first choice left-back is another matter entirely, with Rodgers playing his full-backs very high up the field, it could depend on how well he links up with the side in the final third, and how effectively he overlaps.

As Enrique has been a useful asset for Liverpool in that part of the field, though if Cissokho fits in well and looks comfortable defensively, it wouldn't be surprising if he became a regular.
