Former Liverpool midfielder Paul Ince has told talkSPORT that Reds fans will forgive Luis Suarez when he returns to the side, despite the summer’s ongoing transfer saga.
Suarez’s Anfield future has dominated the headlines over the summer after the forward openly admitted he wanted to leave the club following his 30-goal season.
Liverpool swiftly rejected an approach from Premier League rivals Arsenal, though reports currently suggest the Gunners have not given up hope on signing the 26-year-old, while Suarez’s preferred move to Real Madrid has never materialised.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers also planted himself firmly in the middle of the bust-up, with the manager insisting Suarez had to apologise to his teammates before he joined first-team training, after finding himself begin his pre-season preparations away from the rest of the side.
But it now looks likely that the striker will stay in Merseyside after reportedly patching things up with Rodgers, with the prolific goalscorer taking to the field in Steven Gerrard’s testimonial match against Olympiacos last week.
And Ince, who spent two years at Anfield from 1997 to 1999 following his arrival from Inter Milan, believes Liverpool fans will be quick to forgive the forward when he returns to his previous goalscoring form in a red shirt.
“It hasn’t been great with everything that has happened over the summer, but one thing about Liverpool fans is that they are forgiving,” he told Drive Time.
“All they want to see is Suarez back, and when he’s back on the pitch and scoring goals none of what has gone on will matter.”
The ex-England international continued to explain just how important the frontman is to Rodgers’ side, and insisted that if Suarez stays at the club there should be no reason why Liverpool shouldn’t chelange their top-four rivals and secure Champions League qualification this season.
“Towards the end of last season Brendan Rodgers started to get to grips with the job at Liverpool and the players started to understand how Brendan wanted to play,” he added.
“They played really good football and there were a lot of games I saw last year where they created a many chances but just couldn’t score.
“That’s why it’s so imperative that they try to keep Suarez.
“He’s a goal scorer and Daniel Sturridge has come back looking sharp, so there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be competing to get into the Champions League.
“I’ll be disappointed if they’re not up there, that’s for sure.”
